Getting really mixed signals from my best guy friend... can somebody help a girl out!!?

Recently I have been hanging out with my friend a lot, and things have gotten really confusing between us. I have known him for years now, but it was only last summer we started to grown close. He is a known player but unusually sweet to me. I know he feels something too because the things we share and he casually slips in words like "You look really pretty tonight," or "You're going to make some lucky guy really happy someday." He shares all of his passions and dreams with me. Just this morning he paid for the bill at breakfast! He's always doing little things like that, but we never address what's going on between us. He is constantly flirting with girls, doesn't matter if they are a stranger or my best friend, and hooking up with them. Frustrating! I give subtle signals and say sweet things to him too. There have been more than a few opportunities for something to happen between us! He has never tried to make a move on me, and he tries to get with every other girl in his eyesight, what is the deal?! And what do I do about it I am a really guarded person I don't have enough courage to say or do anything first especially because every other girl throws themselves at him. I am not interested in just hooking up with people like he can do I have more of a jokingly rep between friends of being "prude" lol. If it makes a difference, we are both in the first couple years of our twenties.
