How can i connect my laptop to my wifi?

I cant connect my laptop to my wifi. i have my modem connected to my router then my router connected to my laptop but once i disconnect my laptop from the router i do get wifi but i cant connect to it! PLEASE HELP! i want to use my laptop somewhere else than my living room!
