Computer external drive problems (DVD's)?

My computer stopped reading DVD's a few weeks ago which is strange considering it's about 3 years old. I bought an external drive to solve the problem but the computer still doesn't detect a DVD in the new drive itself. It doesn't seem to detect the external drive. One of my programs is telling me that there is no hardware decoder detected in my computer, could that be the reason my problem?
