Why is my Windows Media Player not working?

At first, the media player wouldn't play my DVDs because I don't have a DVD Decoder. So I downloaded one from the Internet. Now, when I try to play a DVD, it says I have to change the screen resolution. So I tried that but to no avail! What should I do? Thank you!
